West Ham United have narrowed their shortlist for the managerial vacancy at Upton Park down to 'five or six candidates'.

Chief executive officer Scott Duxbury has revealed that discussions over finding a successor to Alan Curbishley are well underway following his decision to resign on Wednesday citing a lack of control over the club's transfer policy.

Croatia coach and former Hammers defender Slaven Bilic remains the favourite to take charge at the east London club.

However, there are a host of Italians mentioned as possible candidates due to the presence at Upton Park of sporting director Gianluca Nani.

Former Internazionale boss Robert Mancini, ex-Italy coach Roberto Donadoni and current joint coach of the under-21 side Gianfranco Zola have all been linked to the vacancy.

"They (the interviews) are continuing. We have got our shortlist," Duxbury told Sky Sports News.

"We have narrowed it down to about five or six candidates now. We'll be meeting with people over the weekend."
